J. K. Rowling caused quite a stir recently when she was quoted as saying Ron and Hermione shouldn’t have ended up together in the Harry Potter series. Most fans of the book were shocked. But when you read the entire interview, she also reveals,
Oh, maybe she and Ron will be alright with a bit of counseling, you know. I wonder what happens at wizard marriage counseling? They’ll probably be fine. He needs to work on his self-esteem issues and she needs to work on being a little less critical.
So they may get their happily-ever-after after all.
I’m not surprised. I picked Hermione + Ron all along.
I know who the book-ish girls always fall for. The boys who make them laugh.
That’s why I’m Team Peeta. That’s why I knew Joey would pick Pacey instead of Dawson.
(One mistake–being on Team Jacob. But I still think that would have been a better match.)
Girls who spend lots of time reading books need a pretty big incentive to put the book down. Something (or somebody) in the real world has to compete with everything happening on the pages. Another boy holding his own book probably isn’t going to cause her to look up. But a funny boy will be able to distract her. And keep her attention long after she’s finished reading.
From “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (the movie):
“You know, my dear, the moment I looked into your eyes I knew that you did not have the mind for the noble art of Divination. See? Right here. You’re young in years but the heart that beats beneath your bosom is as shriveled as an old maid’s, your soul as dry as the pages of the books to which you so desperately cleave.” -Professor Trelawney to Hermione
What’s the cure for a soul as dry as the pages of the books to which one so desperately cleaves? Laughter. So I’m cheering for Hermione and Ron. And all the book-ish girls who fall for funny boys.
