Tips to Help You Get Ready for NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) starts soon! If you’re planning to participate, here are a few ways you can be getting ready now.

  • Outline– Get the general plot idea down on paper or screen. There will be plenty of surprises along the way, but it helps to know the general direction you want to head.
  • Research– Find out more about the time period and setting of your novel. You may need to head to the library.
  • Get to know your characters– Dig deeper into their lives and backgrounds. If your main character is a lawyer, you may need to research law terminology, average salary, size of law firms, and the justice system. If his wife is an artist, learn more about art supplies, famous art galleries, and what artists inspire her.
  • Clean off your desk- Go ahead and do it now so you don’t have any excuses on November 1st.

Writing 50,000 words in 30 days won’t be easy, but taking these steps now will ensure you make the most of NaNoWriMo!
